Fremantle has its cruise port very close to the city centre (Central Business District, or CBD, as they call it in Australia) so we were able to walk off the ship and spend the day under our own steam.

Jakarta is a massive city — its urban area is ranked second most populous in the world, after Tokyo, at an estimated 34 million people – with terrible traffic, a cruise port well away from the urban centre, and no reliable public transit to the port.

Our next port of call was Safaga, an important industrial port on the Red Sea but also a (more-or-less) reasonable jumping-off point for a visit to Luxor, which includes the Valley of the Kings and the Karnak Temple Complex.
